Climate Smart Communities began in 2009 as an interagency initiative of New York State. The program is sponsored jointly by six New York State agencies: Department of Environmental Conservation; Energy Research and Development Authority or NYSERDA; Department of Public Service; Department of State; Department of Transportation; and Department of Health. The Department of Environmental Conservation acts as the main administrator of the program.
The original focus of the program was on encouraging local governments to commit to act on climate change by passing a resolution containing the Climate Smart Pledge. The certification program was added in 2014 and provides specific guidance on how to implement the pledge. Certified communities are leaders, going beyond the pledge by completing and documenting a suite of actions that mitigate and adapt to climate change at the local level. Communities earn points toward certification for each action they complete. In addition to accumulating points, each community must complete a number of mandatory and priority actions at each level of certification.
The Village of Woodbury is one of 85 Designated NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities. The village has received 1700 points by completing 6 High Impact Actions. The Committee would like to be a 2 Star Community by 2025. The Committee achieved it's goal and became a 2 Star certified community in 2024. Congratulations Woodbury.

Free Family Friendly Event
The Flash Trash Mob is a grassroots effort to clean up Woodbury. Inspired by the Climate Smart Community Task Force, this group is intended to encourage and gather community members to help pick up trash. The group will host short, family-friendly, pop-up events, posted on Facebook, to clean up various parts of Woodbury.
The concept is to make things as easy as possible - bring your own gloves, litter pickers, and hand sanitizer, we will provide the bags. Bring a family member or friend! Clean up as much litter as you can in 30 minutes or an hour. The task force will coordinate the pick-up of the bags.
This group also encourages residents to pick up trash whenever they can, not just during events! If everyone helps keep their neighborhood block/park/school/etc. free of litter, we will all be able to enjoy a cleaner, healthier, safer, and more beautiful Woodbury.
